Your new perennial/rock garden
Congratulations on your new perennial/rock garden! Your property and neighborhood is now more beautiful, fire safe, and water resilient.
FAQs
1) Where are the flowers?
Be patient. They will come. Some plants flower only during certain seasons. Some may not flower until the roots are established. Expect to wait about a year before things really start growing.
2) What do I do about weeds?
Landscape fabric has been placed under most of the rocks (except where no sunlight reaches.) As the plants grow the fabric needs to be trimmed away from the plants. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT. The fabric is only a temporary measure until the garden has filled in. Landscape fabric will eventually prevent moisture from penetrating into the soil.
3) The gravel looks a little dirty. What can I do?
Silt is naturally drawn out of the river the gravel is sourced from. If it’s moved around it will rise to the surface. If this happens a good soaking will move the silt under the rocks.
How do I prune my plants?
4) Every species requires different type of care. I highly recommended Sunset Publishing’s Pruning Handbook.
5) Will I always need deer fencing?
No. It can be taken down once the plants are established (about a year.) After that deer fencing can be placed around individual plants that need protection.
6) What about watering?
All your plants have been mulched with arborist woodchips. This serves as a water reservoir as long as the irrigation system is functioning properly. DURING DAYS OF 90+ BE SURE TO PROVIDE EXTRA WATER. SPRAY THE WATER DIRECTLY ONTO THE WOODCHIPS, NOT THE PLANT (a little water on plant is OK.)
