What is an Environmental Landscaper? Well here goes!
THE BASIC PRECEPTS:
1) We study the natural environments of both the property and surrounding lands before making any decisions. Therefore, an enviroscaper is first and foremost a naturalist.
2) We restore properties to their original health by replicating the original ecosystem. Therefore, an enviroscaper is secondarily an ecologist.
3) We discover species from similar climates around the world. In California this is the Mediterranean climate. Therefore, an enviroscaper is thirdly a botanist.
TO THE PRECEPTS WE ADD THESE LANDSCAPING PHILOSOPHIES:
1) Firescaping– the science and art of creating a fire safe and aesthetically pleasing property. Botanical knowledge of all native and non-native species on a property is crucial in determining flammability profiles.
2) Xeriscaping– the science and art of creating a water resilient property through the use of native plants, irrigation zones, and water catchment technology.
3) Ecoscaping– the philosophy of utilizing resources on the property or as close to property as possible. This includes sharing and bartering for resources among neighbors.
TO THE PRECEPTS AND PHILOSOPHIES WE ADD THESE SCIENCES:
1) Horticulture- The science of selecting, planting, and maintaining site specific trees, shrubs, perennials, and groundcovers.
2) Biochemistry- The science of chemical reactions within biological systems. This helps the enviroscaper make site specific decisions in regards to the soil, nutrient cycling, and plant flammability.
